Drum Recording: Your Favorite Tom Mic?

Sunday November 16, 2008
Of all the parts of a regular drum kit, I find that getting the toms to sound best on a recording is the hardest part! Recently, I've been in love with the Shure Beta 98D/S as a great mic on toms, but I'd love to hear your opinions!

Got a great mic you've used on toms? Leave a comment!

I use the Sennheiser MD 421’s on all my toms. They pick up the snare and the rest of the kit and give me pro sounding drums everytime.www.sterlingsoundstudios.com

I like the 421 too- but when all else fails I pull out that old 57, peel off the duck tape and plug it in…and just like that, it works! peace~J

Let’s not forget that poorly tuned toms will NEVER sound good regardless of the microphone used to capture them. Tuning toms (properly) is a very time consuming task that is well worth it when you get great results.

Senneheiser MD 421’s definitely my favorite tom mic. I’m getting ready to try the shure 98’s on a project soon though. The drum is more important than the mic in my opinion. DW drums all the way!

Yes, MD421 on lower toms, 57 on mid-high toms, E609 also. I deal with a lot of amateur musicians, and in some cases have resorted to Drumagog to rescue the toms.
