Live sound engineers: What's your "tone"?

Sunday October 4, 2009
I was recently working with a fellow engineer -- a top-notch mixer whom I share a lot of work -- and he mentioned that his "tone" was very similar to mine: Heil microphones through QSC speakers. Talking to him, it was obvious that I was, too, felt like that was my "tone" -- and when not mixing with those tools, I feel a little shorted.

So, what's your "tone", on stage or in the studio? What are the tools you can't live without when mixing, and what makes your "signature sound"?

I'd love to hear from you!

for the most part i use some sort of distortion, whether it be intense or mild. i always record my vocals 3 to 5 times and layer them and choose which ones are most dynamic(intense and quiet in some areas) and bring those vocal track levels down fairly low. i might add a slight amound of room like reverb to those vocal tracks to add a little ambience…
the most outstanding versions of the vocal tracks get the distortion treatment and i test them with the other vocal tracks SEVERAL times to see if i sung certain words with special emphasis or certain dialect.
i used to use sure mics but i got me a senheizer e835 and ive never looked back
my preference of effects over my vocals changed in the last 3 albums i produced verses the 4 prior to them. i used 2 love reverbs and different types of delays but they seemed to clutter the aural qualities of my songs with words that sometimes became incomprehensible…
oh well u record and ESPECIALLY playback on all sorts of different types of speakers and setups til you find out which application works best for the music quality and vocals you are trying to express
