2008 Summer NAMM Preview
The best gear, live from Nashville

By Joe Shambro, About.com

Every year, thousands of music industry professionals converge on Anaheim, CA for the yearly NAMM show -- a three-day blowout where the best gear from a variety of major and independent producers are showcased for industry professionals and music retailers.

Summer NAMM is a much more intimate affair; this year, summer NAMM returns to Nashville, TN -- bringing with it some phenomenal gear from some quality names in audio.

Future Sonics introduces new Atrio in-ear monitor, partners with HearUSA Audiologists

One of the more exciting stories from summer NAMM is from our friends at Future Sonics, the originators of the in-ear monitor.

Future Sonics will be introducing the second version of it's critically acclaimed universal-fit Atrio monitors, offering several new improvements on the Atrio's sound quality and design.

The new Atrio monitors will offer improved cabling and improved frequency response (thanks to the Future Sonics MG5pro dynamic driver).

As with all of their products, the Atrio are expected to provide stellar sound quality at much lower volume, providing an audiologically sound monitoring solution for professionals on stage and the studio alike.

Stay tuned for a hands-on review.

Future Sonics also proudly announced their partnership with HearUSA, a 190-store hearing healthcare center. HearUSA will join the Future Sonics network of preferred hearing healthcare providers, supplying custom-molded monitors and custom musician's earplugs for music lovers and music makers alike.

Studio quality iPod recording

This year, with iPod battery life and storage capacity continuously growing, some of the most exciting announcements were recording attachments for the iPod.

Alesis will be introducing the Alesis ProTrack, a stereo recording interface for the iPod.

What sets the ProTrack apart from the pack is the input selection; ProTrack has two condenser microphones built in, and it also adds two combination XLR/1/4" jacks for mic and line input. The XLR inputs supply a full 48v of phantom power.

Belkin -- well-known for their TuneTalk and iTrip accessories -- will be releasing their iPod recording studio device, the GoStudio. Featuring a built-in microphone and speaker, and capabilities for external microphones as well as an amplified headphone out. The GoStudio also introduces built-in compression and limiting.

Edirol announces R-09HR

Edirol has introduced the R-09HR, a high-resolution, 24-bit/96kHz version of their R-09 pocket recorder. Featuring a larger, clearer display, high-quality condenser microphones, and expanded recording resolution settings, the R-09HR offers the same high-resolution recording capability of units much more expensive. With a price point of $399, the R-09HR offers performance far beyond it's price.

And much more...

There's a lot to be seen at summer NAMM 2008, and we'll be bringing it all to you live, starting June 20! Stay tuned for updated coverage!
