Fletcher-Munson Phenomenon

By Joe Shambro, About.com

Definition: The Fletcher-Munson effect is a psycho-acoustic term in which the frequency response of human hearing is subjective to the decibel level of the material.

To understand this, listen to your music playback system at your preferred level. Then, lower the volume significantly. You'll notice that both the low and the high end lose quite a bit of detail; this is the Fletcher-Munson effect. This can be utilized in EQ curves (especially in multiband compressors) to give a special effect to instruments with heavy A-weighted EQ curves.
